What is the Citizen Police Academy?
The Citizen Police Academy is designed to give citizens a better understanding of what police officers do everyday. The popular program provides insight into the philosophy, internal values, and operations of the department. The academy’s slogan, “Understanding Through Education” expresses its ultimate goal: to improve the relationship and rapport between citizens and the Lewisville Police. The program also gives citizens the opportunity to interact with officers, ask questions, and express any concerns they might have. This two-way communication has proven to be an effective, successful way to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Citizen Police Academy. Who is eligible to attend?
The class is made up of a cross section of the Lewisville community. You can apply if you are at least 21 years old and live or work in the City of Lewisville.
How much does it cost to attend?
There is no cost to attend the Citizen Police Academy! However, the course does require a substantial time commitment from the student. Students will not be allowed to graduate if they miss more than two sessions during the 9-week program.
Where are the classes held?
The academy is held each year in the Fall and meets on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to Noon at Lewisville City Hall, Lower Level, 151 W. Church Street. Class size is limited to 30 students.

What is the curriculum at the Citizen Police Academy?
Topics of instruction include K-9 program, Crisis Negotiations, S.W.A.T., Jail Operations, Communications, Criminal Investigations, Traffic Operations, Narcotics and more.
What is the benefit of attending the course?
After graduation students may wish to share their new knowledge with other citizens to improve the efficiency of law enforcement in our community. Students will also become eligible to do a “ride-along” with patrol officers. Graduates may join the CPA Alumni Association, and can be considered for participation in COP (Citizen On Patrol) – the volunteer program managed by citizens that provide the police with extra eyes and ears through patrolling activities.
