Wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from water used by the community. Wastewater is created by residences, institutions, hospitals, commercial, and industrial establishments. It is transported from these sources through a network of pipes and pump stations to the wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater collection and treatment is subject to local, state, and federal regulations and standards. Industrial sources of wastewater are monitored by the Environment Control Services Division to ensure no adverse effects occur through the transport, treatment, or by pass through of contaminants to the receiving waters.

Wastewater treatment includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove contaminants to produce treated water or effluent that is suitable for discharge or reuse. The City's Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed and permitted to handle a capacity of 12 million gallons per day.
