Fire Hiring Process
Are there any residency requirements?
LFD does not have any residency requirements.
Are there any specialized units I can be a part of at the Lewisville Fire Department?
LFD specializes in Dive Rescue responses for the region but is also in the process of creating a swift water response team as well.
Can a paramedic currently in Fire School apply?
Yes, providing the candidate is currently a certified firefighter and is able to attend the 4 week mandatory onboarding training.
Can I still apply if I am in the military reserve?
Yes, we are proud to accommodate your work schedule for your service to the country.
Can I transfer my State Fire Certification from another state to Texas?
Yes, however you will need to contact the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and have a current TCFP certification prior to your application submission.
Can I volunteer at the Lewisville Fire Department?
LFD has a volunteer program designed to provide rehab and support services to our operations, we do not have any volunteer opportunities for suppression, EMS or other fire ground operations.
Do I get extra points if I served in the military?
We do not offer any points for military service.
Does Lewisville Fire Department pay for paramedic school/classes?
LFD sends 4-8 members each year to an online paramedic program which allows the firefighter to remain on shift while attending classes.
Does my experience as a volunteer firefighter improve my chances of employment?
Volunteer experience is always encouraged as experience in the fire service is beneficial but not necessary.
Does the department provide emergency medical services?
Yes, LFD has 5 front line Mobile intensive Care Units staffed with a minimum of 1 EMT-B and 1 paramedic as well as Advanced Life Support Equipment on all Engines and Trucks.
Does the Lewisville Fire Department accept applications from out of state certified firefighters?
No, you must be a certified Firefighter in Texas to be an eligible to apply.

How long is the Fire Academy?
The initial orientation training (Mini Academy) is approximately 4 weeks.
How long is the onboarding/training for new recruits?
The onboarding process includes a 4 week "mini-academy" which covers the fireground operations and EMS skills desired for a new candidated followed by a one year period in which the candidate completes a task book encompassing all LFD operations.
How many firefighters is Lewisville Fire hiring in the current opening?
We will be hiring six qualified candidates for the August 2024 opening.
Is LFD currently considering 48/96 work schedule?
LFD has formed a research committee on 48/96, We are currently in the information gathering process and will continue to analyze the data to determine if a 48/96 is the direction we will take in the future.
What are the physical demands of firefighting?
Firefighting is a physically demanding career that requires core strength combined with agility and endurance. We work in all types of environments from extreme heat to bitter cold.
What certifications do I need before I can apply to become a Firefighter with Lewisville?
You must have a current DSHS EMT-B or Paramedic certification as well as a current TCFP Basic Fire Suppression certification.
The lateral hire program is available to Texas certified firefighter/paramedics. Lateral applicants must have worked for a paid department in a position where they provided fire and EMS services. Out of state applicants for Lateral hire must be certified as a structural firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and paramedic licensed or certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) at the time of application.
Lateral applicants are eligible for a starting salary based on the number of whole years of firefighter experience. Service time, for determining the starting salary, can include multiple agencies if breaks in service are less than thirty days and all agencies meet the required criteria. What is the pay structure for the Lewisville Fire Department?
What should I bring to the PAT / Rapid Panel Interview?
Bring your Driver License and wear comfortable athletic clothes and tennis shoes for the PAT/ Rapid Panel Interview. The PAT and Rapid Panel Interview are completed on the same day. There is no change of clothes needed.
Which certifications do I need to be an eligible candidate?
You must have a current DSHS EMT-B or Paramedic certification as well as a current TCFP Basic Fire Supression certification.
Who qualifies for the hiring incentive and how is it paid?
Everyone hired is eligible for the signing bonus. Firefighter/EMT's will receive $2,000, and Firefighter/Paramedic's will receive $2,500. The signing bonus will be paid in full on the first full paycheck. If you are referred by a City of Lewisville employee, and list them as a referral source on your application, they will receive a referral incentive.
