Emergencies and disasters strike without warning and you probably won’t have time to gather what you need, so it is a good idea to plan ahead and have your kit all ready and waiting. Pack supplies in a duffle bag, suitcase or storage container and keep it in an easily accessible place. Check and update your kit every year by checking expiration dates and testing batteries and updating documents.
- Water—one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
- Food—at least a three-day supply of non perishable food
- Can opener—if your kit contains canned food
- Radio—Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA all hazards radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
- Flashlight—don’t forget extra batteries
- First Aid Kit
- Whistle—to signal for help
- Dust Mask—to help filter contaminated air
- Plastic sheeting and Duct Tape—for sheltering in place
- Personal sanitation – moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties
- Wrench or pliers—to turn off utilities
- Local maps
- Cash—in case ATMs are unavailable or something prevents the use of credit/debit cards
Additional items you may want to put in your kit:
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- Medications you or your family are taking
- Baby items—such as extra formulas or diapers
- Change of clothing - such as a long sleeved shirt, long pants, and sturdy shoes
- Important family documents—such as copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Emergency candles
- Feminine supplies and person hygiene items
