Poydras: The Road to Progress

Artist: Daren Fagan

Installed: 2018

Location: Visitor Information Center, 247 W. Main Street

Poydras Street never covered more than about a mile in length, but has played a large role in Lewisville history. The north-south road appears on photos and maps as early as the 1880s, already bearing the Poydras name. Through the decades, Poydras Street saw the city’s first public well and standpipe in 1985, the home field for the LHS Fighting Farmers starting in the 1920a, and the first municipal building in 1927.

Poydras north of Church Street was replaced by City Hall in 2001-2003, and segments of Poydras Street immediately north and south of Main Street were converted into pedestrian plazas in 2003. The street segment south of Church Street became part of Wayne Ferguson Plaza in 2016.

The street is mostly gone today, but its impact on Lewisville endures.

Daren Fagan is a Lewisville-area artist who also created the “Earth and Beyond” sculpture at the corner of Main and Charles. He specializes in industrial fixed and kinetic sculptures, incorporating various forms of recycled steel, automotive and motorcycle components, and found objects in his work.
