Mary Annaïse HeglarThe Lewisville Talks – City Speaker Series continues to incite curiosity and promote meaningful conversation with its next engagement featuring author Mary Annaïse Heglar.

Mary Annaïse Heglar will talk about her journey to climate justice and how it led her to untangle her family’s history with the school desegregation movement in Nashville, TN. She will discuss her research and how it shows up in her new novel Troubled Waters. She will also talk about how she draws inspiration from her family history and the Civil Rights movement more broadly for communicating about climate change and pressing on when it feels like the world is on your shoulders.

Heglar is known for her essays that dissect and interrogate the climate crisis, drawing heavily on her personal experience as a Black woman with deep roots in the South. Her work has appeared in New York Magazine, The Nation, The Boston Globe, Vox, Rolling Stone, and other outlets. Her work has also been featured in collections like All We Can Save, The World As We Knew It, The Black Agenda, Letters to the Earth, and Not Too Late. She is the author of the children’s book, The World is Ours to Cherish (Random House Kids, 2024), and the novel, Troubled Waters (Harper Muse, 2024).

Heglar will be available to sign copies of her new book, Troubled Waters, following the presentation. Attendees can purchase copies of her book onsite from BLACKLIT, a local bookseller and subscription service that highlights Black authors and entrepreneurs.
